17-year-old Rea Martin has a passionate dream – to become a famous mangaka. A dream that’s very hard to fulfill in her hometown of Novi Sad, Serbia. With her recent streak of artist blocks, it’s been impossible for her to think of a good story. Until that day at her favorite Asian restaurant, the Orchid, when she starts getting strange hallucinations. Could it be a subconscious thing? Maybe stress? Or was it that unusually spicy bowl of ramen?

22-year-old Hiroshi Date lives for adventure and food. He’s a backpacker and loves to travel from one corner of the earth to the other. But ever since that accident at EXIT music festival where he lost his backpack with all of his documents, he’s been stuck in Novi Sad working as a cook in the Orchid. It’s only his second day at work when a beautiful girl catches his eye. Using his grandma’s seven spices, he prepares her a special meal in an attempt to impress her. But it seems his plan has backfired on him.

21-year-old Jelena Ristic (read: Yell-ay-nah Ree-stich)has lived in Novi Sad all her life. She knows almost the whole city and is renowned for her matchmaking skills. As a hostess at the Orchid, she feels it’s her duty to help with the social lives of her customers, especially her old friend Rea. Bubbly and eager, she sees what appears to be a very confusing accident as the perfect opportunity to bring two unique people together.


What happens when you put a sarcastic wannabe comic-artist, an awkward foreigner and a local busybody together in a backward country itching its way into Europe? “surREAl” happens!
This slice-of-life story is a mix of genres, mainly fantasy and comedy with romantic and adventurous elements. It’s a great treat for anime fans, as Rea often travels to popular anime worlds (such as Naruto) in her hallucinations. There are many references to the author’s love of Japan, like the chapters that are completely done in chibi style. Inserts of everyday life are thrown in alongside the plot, to poke fun at the mentality of the townspeople. Scolding some, while praising other qualities. Cultural differences are also an important topic in this manga. Which is mostly depicted in Jelena and Hiroshi’s relationship – the awkward clash of extrovert southern and withdrawn eastern.
